Ten Years of Questionable Content

Jeph Jacques Questionable Content is ten years old.  That’s a webcomic I’ve read from just about the beginning and it’s been not only a fun read but exciting to see Jacques improve in his craft so much (and so publicly). Check out the ComixTalk interview with Jeph from 2004 — such adorable art!  ComixTalk also reviewed the webcomic in 2005 and had another interview in 2006.

Review of The Silver Six and Tommysaurus Rex

Receiving two new graphic novels from Scholastic is usually a good day at the X-house.  (Yes, DISCLAIMER!!! Scholastic provided review copies of both THE SILVER SIX and TOMMYSAURUS REX to me.)  More and more I rely on the X-girls’ opinion of such books as a baseline for whether or not they work.  Still can’t get them to actually write the reviews for me, but I haven’t given up hope on that completely. I haven’t written many reviews myself this year — I glanced over at the ComixTALK homepage today and realized that the last update there was end of last …

Fund the Third Spacetrawler Book

[kickstarter url=http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/654744622/spacetrawler-book-three width=599] Christopher Baldwin is running a kickstarter for the third and last book collecting his science fiction webcomic Spacetrawler.  If you’re not already reading this comic — go now.  We’ll wait.  Still here? Look Baldwin is like your favorite indy film director who has done some amazing work that you, person of taste, distinction and erudition appreciate and love.  Now he’s done a take on a genre with his same intelligent and emotionally compelling approach as always.  It’s a more accessible, more exciting and still just as much depth as his past work. The past books looked great …

Booster Dude and Blue Beetle Jr.

Two of my favorite characters from the Keith Giffen run on Justice League are Booster Gold and Blue Beetle.  So forgive me if I got a big kick out of the most recent JL8 webcomic installment.  Nailed those characters as 8 year olds perfectly. Also I cannot understand why DC doesn’t just hire this guy to do this comic for them officially.  It’s the most original take on these characters; it’s completely kid-friendly and yet is genuinely funny in a way that can appeal to multiple age groups.

Star Trek Fan Fiction

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3G-ziTBAkbQ?rel=0] I have no idea how this project exists given our copyright regime. And yet, why shouldn’t it?  The original Star Trek series now has been out for more than 40 years, giving its owners ample time to recoup their investment and make a tremendous amount of profit over their creative efforts.  On balance, society is better off with the freedom for others to make their own versions after forty years (I might even argue twenty-five years is plenty of time).  What amazing stories and spins on things people will come up with if they don’t have to ask …
