Ready Player One is a good book that I read on the recommendation of the Boing Boing review. Author Ernest Cline created a really fun story within which he could mine Eighties nostalgia. Ultimately the characters were a little too thin for me to fully invest in the book but I still think it was one of the better science fiction style novels I’ve read recently. Legends of Zork: Take 2

I played a bit of the new browser-based Legends of Zork when it launched, mostly because Jim Zubkavich did the artwork for it. Fun but got a bit repetitive for me so I stopped. They’ve kept making changes though so I thought I’d give it another shot.

Mind of Freeman

Half Life is one of my favorite videogames of all time. I only found out about Ross Scott’s series of videos called Freeman’s Mind this year. Simple but funny – Scott riffs over the action in the original Half Life game as if he was the main character. It is not at all what I’d think of as Freeman’s personality (although in a remarkably McCloudian trick, Half Life gives no personality to Freeman so that every person playing the games gets to fill in whatever they imagine).
