The Abominable Charles Christopher

I’ve trying out Comic Rocket, a webcomic tracking and reading site, and the first comic I loaded up was The Abominable Charles Christopher, a fantastic webcomic I’ve read at various points but haven’t caught up on most of this year.  I decided to read it over from the start of the archives and it was well worth it. It’s a funny webcomic alright but in it’s own way, a little weird.  Like a family-friendly Twin Peaks.  Strange things are happening in the woods of the man-beast Charles Christopher.  There are all kinds of threads going that creator Karl Kerschl has …

Kickstart My Art: Clang

Neal Stephenson is a geek legend at this point. I don’t think his first novel Snow Crash would have existed without William Gibson’s early novels coming first, but it’s just speculation on my part unless I get a chance to talk to either author.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Neal’s books and unlike some, I’ve liked each new one better then the last.  What some see as a weakness — stuffing a tremendous amount of knowledge on the subjects of his books — well, I tend to love that part of his books. His most recent project, The Mongoliad, came …

We Have A Hulkster

I went back to check out Mr. Hipp, the fairly impressive art and comics blog, which features a lot of comics to pop culture mashup ideas.  It’s a mainstream version of T.S. Elliott’s The Wasteland, without all of the footnotes.  Take elements, memes, from different sources and cross-pollinating them is one of the major schools of art these days. This might be my current favorite one from Dan Hipp’s blog right now: But it’s a current favorite.  It takes a well-known line from the very current Avengers movie and a very Eighties wrestling star to create the new punchline.  While I …

Make Art. Make Good Art.

[vimeo 42372767 w=550 h=413] Neil Gaiman addressing the University of the Arts Class of 2012 from The University of the Arts.  It’s an inspiring speech for an audience that probably needs it.  Well actually who doesn’t need it.  The really really great Zen Pencils webcomic turned Gaiman’s remarks into a great comic. MORE:  This all reminded me of a great excerpt from remarks by Ira Glass, the creator and host of the radio show This American Life, about closing the gap between your ambition and your ability: [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BI23U7U2aUY?rel=0]

Bloggity Blog Blog

Last month, I had an idea to craft this site into this “project” that was both actual cultural website with real, if sporadic commentary and reviews (i haz opinions!) but also behind the scenes staff soap opera leaked out into the posts and other tweets and things that would be scatted throughout the site.  Plus a comic about it all that a staffer would create for the site.  I still think it would be a hell of a fun project but yeah, too much time and effort to do a decent job of.  So I deleted a few posts just …
