Neal Stephenson Enters the Googleplex

Neal Stephenson is an amazing processor of information.  I (like countless other fans of his work) am currently reading Anathem, his latest novel which tackles such myriad issues as religion, science, the long clock… I’m only 200 pages into a lengthy brick of a book.  So far it is living up to the amazing trilogy of his previous work, The Baroque Cycle books. If you missed them, The Baroque Cycle books are Quicksilver, The Confusion, and The System of the World.  Stephenson has an amazing ability to process, digest and integrate knowledge in his work — the books are historical …

Drupal 6.0 Is Go!!!

I have been waiting for Drupal 6.0 to drop. I switched to Drupal from Postnuke in early 2006. Drupal was at 4.6 (which was quite good in many ways) although it wasn’t too long until Drupal 4.7 came out and I made the switch. ComixTalk has been on Drupal 5.0 for about a year now and it’s showing it’s age, but knowing that 6.0 was coming I didn’t want to spend too much time on the 5.0 version.

Pop Culture Rewind: Contact

Pop Culture Rewind: writing about pop culture years after it was current. So I watch the movie Contact the other night. First off, I read the novel by Carl Sagan almost 10 years ago. I have fond, but mixed memories of that book that watching the film actually clarified (although I am not really sure how closely the film follows the book – obviously the film condensed the book’s plot considerably). The book’s strength is Carl Sagan’s account of how a “first contact” with an alien civilization might occur. Not what the aliens would be like or what they would say to …

A series of posts on Postnuke from August 2005

Late Sat Night and All is Sort of Well Posted on Sunday 14 August 2005 I just posted this in the PN forum for developers: As a learning exercise I’ve been making some small changes to the Example module – added columns basically at this point, changed the name of some variables. Anyhow I couldn’t get it to initialize at first because of a T_ENCAPSED_AND_WHITESPACE error. Which in searching the forums I realized is basically a typo type error. (This post was helpful) But I combed over it against the original Example module and could find anything. Because the error was …

Jay Z and Me Got 99 Problems

I ain’t a passed the bar but I know a lil’ bit enough to know you ain’t illegally searchin my shit. Actually I’m pretty sure I transcribed at least some of that wrong. I’ve been listening to the Grey Album (Black Album + White Album = Grey Album). It’s good. It’s also illegal under current copyright at applied to music sampling. A lot of discussion concerning the Grey Album seems to be focused on preservation and expansion of fair use (including parody) to reuse snippets of existing art to create new art. The more I chew on this I realize …
