Running of the Gifts: 2012

Happy Holidays to everyone.  Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah!  Falalala Festivus! Is Darren Bleuel still celebrating Agnostica? Apparently so — Happy Agnostica!  Good cheer to all Jedi and Pastafarians  too.  Really, best wishes to everyone trying to make the world a little better. We had a nice time at the X compound today.  Parents, Parents-in-Law and extended Family-in-Law have all gathered at various times from the weekend until today.  It’s a bit more extroverted immersion than I’m used to on a daily basis but it’s been fun and it’s been worth the exhaustion.  Today was the annual Running of the Gift Wrap …

My Favorite: Movies: Nineties

Picking ten favorite movies of the nineties is kind of a ridiculous challenge now that I’ve plowed through every year.  I have a list of a hundred favorites compiled from the decade — all of which certainly are movies I love. Now that I’ve started this project, I honestly wonder how critics compile their best of lists — I suppose they are more beholden to some consensus of critical acclaim but even then it must be extremely difficult to narrow in on just ten movies.  AV Club has a top ten of Being John Malkovich, Rushmore, Unforgiven, Reservoir Dogs, Out …

My Favorite: Movies: 1999

Wow I’m excited! It’s not often I set a goal and actually meet it, but here we are at the end of the Nineties with ten posts, one for each year, listing my favorites.  Next step is to try and come up with a top ten list for the entire decade.  Before that I sure would love to hear some comments, arguments, etc on why you think I’m completely nuts in what I’ve picked. A lot of movies I missed in 1999 — here’s the ones I’m putting on my to-watch list: The Blair Witch Project, The Green Mile, Any Given Sunday, The Cider …

My Favorite: Movies: 1998

I might have to take a break from this exercise, I don’t want it to devolve to far into compulsively toting up lists of not seen, top ten and other movies I’ve seen. Oh wait, that’s pretty much what these posts have been this week.  The most interesting things about looking back on a year’s worth of movies are remembering which ones you’ve definitely seen and have some inkling of why you liked them or not versus the ones you’re only vaguely familiar with, including the ones you may have seen but can’t be sure anymore. There are a number …

My Favorite: Movies: 1997

What was the deal with 1997?  Multiple movies about giant killer volcanoes?  Anyhow, there were only a few movies I saw on IMDb that I have not seen that seemed like ones I should try to catch: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, The Man Who Knew Too Little, Princess Mononoke and Donnie Brasco.  Whether that was because I saw more good movies, fewer good movies came out that year or I am just getting lazier in typing up these year by year posts, I leave up to you, discerning reader. My top ten for that year is: Face/Off Jackie Brown L.A. Confidential …

My Favorite: Movies: 1996

1996 was my first full year on the East Coast.  I’m curious as to whether the number of movies I saw dipped dramatically as I was working long, long hours that year. Movies that I did not see from that year: A Time to Kill; Scream; Beavis and Butt-Head Do America; Romeo + Juliet; Shine; The Truth About Cats & Dogs; he Long Kiss Goodnight; Black Sheep; The Island of Dr. Moreau; Kingpin; The Frighteners; Secrets & Lies; Big Night; Mulholland Falls; 2 Days in the Valley; Hamlet; and Hard Eight. My top ten favorites are: Fargo Flirting With Disaster The Daytrippers Trainspotting Bottle Rocket The English Patient Independence Day That Thing You Do! Swingers …

My Favorite: Movies: 1995

1995 marks the beginning of the second half of my review of my favorite movies from the Nineties.  Picking a top ten from each year is an interesting (to me) challenge — I do not look forward to trying to distill a top ten list for the decade.  But onward! As usual there are a bunch of decent to probably great movies from 1995 that I haven’t seen yet including: GoldenEye; Se7en; Clueless; Casino; Dead Presidents; Dead Man Walking; Rob Roy; Friday; To Die For; Clockers; Mighty Aphrodite; Before Sunrise; Tank Girl; Mallrats; Living in Oblivion; Dead Man; Kicking and Screaming; Empire Records; Strange Days; Nixon; and Ghost in the Shell. My favorites of the movies I’ve seen are: Smoke …

My Favorite: Movies: of 1994

One of a series of posts, continually updated, where I write about [media] I love, in this case being movies from 1994.  Not necessarily movies I saw in 1994, but ones released that year regardless of when I got around to watching them.  Most of these I actually saw in the theaters back in 1994 so it has been many years ago and I’m relying on my memory and my general sense of how I would have ranked them back then.  I did a trawl through IMDB to try and make sure I wasn’t forgetting a less popular gem I …
